Only highly intelligent people procrastinate.

The Blessing & Curse of a Vivid Imagination.

Hey friend,

Did you know the people who are most likely to procrastinate on their goals are usually the most intelligent, creative and emotionally in-tune people? I bet you haven’t heard intelligent & procrastinate in the same sentence… but it’s true.

“Only overly intelligent and creative people procrastinate.” But how can that be?

I’ll go ahead and answer that with a guided experience. Read closely.

Imagine yourself strolling down the aisles of your local grocery store, surrounded by the familiar hum of activity. You’re on a mission, scanning the produce section for a pop of yellow. Finally, your eyes land on the vibrant display of lemons, their bright yellow hue standing out against the earthy backdrop of other fruits.

You reach out and grasp one of these cheerful orbs, feeling its textured, slightly waxy skin under your fingers. With the lemon in hand, you look around for a knife and a cutting board to slice through its sunny exterior.

You find what you need and set to work. As you slice the lemon lengthwise, the blade glides through the taut skin and the flesh parts to reveal the juicy, segmented interior. The fresh, zesty aroma of citrus fills the air, invigorating and sharp. You slice again, creating a neat lemon wedge, the kind that sits enticingly on the rim of a glass of Coca-Cola at a restaurant.

Holding the wedge up to your eyes, you take a moment to admire the glistening, translucent flesh, each cell brimming with tart juice. As you bring it closer to your mouth, you anticipate the burst of flavor to come.

The instant your teeth sink into the juicy slice, a rush of intensely sour citrus floods your taste buds. It’s an explosion of flavor, almost too much to handle. Your face contorts in reaction; your eyes squint shut against the sharp tang, and your mouth puckers. Almost immediately, a wave of saliva surges, your body’s natural response to this acidic assault, working overtime to balance the potent taste of vitamin C.

There’s a good chance that you’re currently producing more saliva than usual, which tells us that your body is trying to process citric acid, although no lemon juice has actually touched your tongue!

What does that tell you about the nature of reality?

It’s crazy. Your brain cannot tell the difference between a well-imagined thought and reality.

The more imaginative, creative and intelligent you are, the more vivid your thoughts of success and failure are too.

So what does this have to do with procrastination?

Well, i dont know about you but my biggest bouts of procrastination start with creating vivid alternate realities in my head instead of being present with the task at hand. These day dreams are so vivid that you can almost touch it, hear it, smell it.

Hence the name of this week’s entry: A vivid imagination is a double-edged sword.

Used correctly, you’re able to manifest your highest desires quicker than the normal human, because it’s already happened in your mind, time just hasn’t caught up yet.

Used incorrectly, you become consumed by irrelevant or fearful imagined realities that play out in your brain chemistry and cause you to procrastinate and make little to no progress in the goals you’ve set, instead you unconsciously distract yourself with social media, junk food, porn, etc

The trick to using a vivid imagination to your advantage is to visualise your success as much as humanly possible.

So, about to embark on 2hrs of deep focused work? Visualise the long-term reward. Visualise the short-term reward. Visualise the reality of success, to drastically increase the chances of success in real life.

But ofcourse, this all starts with being very selective with the imagery that you expose yourself to… (limit social media at all costs lol)
